Homeschooling is legal in all fifty states. What each state asks of you differs a great deal, and the honest summary is that most states ask for far less than parents fear.
You are the school, not us
This matters more than any other sentence on this page. School of David Academy is a curriculum and support program. It is not an accredited school and it does not issue diplomas or transcripts. In the eyes of your state, you are the one educating your child, and the legal obligation is yours. Our job is to make meeting it straightforward.
The shape of it
Requirements generally fall into four buckets, and your state will use some combination of them:
- Notice. Some states ask you to file a short letter of intent, usually once a year. Many ask for nothing at all.
- Subjects. Some name subjects that must be covered. Texas, for example, expects a bona fide curriculum covering reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics and good citizenship. Ours is designed to cover all five.
- Records. Attendance, work samples, or a portfolio. We keep attendance and progress for you and you can export it at any time.
- Assessment. A minority of states ask for periodic standardised testing or an evaluation.
How to check yours, properly
We are not lawyers and we will not pretend a website can replace checking. The Home School Legal Defense Association publishes a current, state-by-state summary of the law, and it is the reference most homeschooling families use:
Your state’s department of education website is the other authoritative source. If anything you read there seems to conflict with what we have told you, believe them and then tell us, because we will want to fix it.
What we keep for you
- Attendance, logged as you mark work complete.
- Progress through each unit, by child and by subject.
- An exportable summary you can hand to anyone who asks.
- The scope and sequence for every grade, so you can show exactly what was taught.
